What are the causes of a downturned smile?

1. Ageing – as we age the skin naturally loses collagen and elastin leading to more skin laxity. This combined with the downward movement of the facial fat pads can lead to more skin sagging, especially around the corners of the mouth.

2. Overactive muscle activity – the Depressor Anguli Oris muscle runs from the corner of your mouth down towards your chin and is responsible for the corners of your mouth turning down. If this muscle is overactive, it can cause a downward pull even at rest. This produces the sad and negative appearance.

How can a downturned smile be treated?

There are two ways to treat a downturned smile and they can be used separately or combined.

1. Botox can be used to relax the muscle and stop the Depressor Anguli Oris muscle pulling the corners of the mouth. Treatment will cause the corners of the mouth to be slightly lifted, giving the mouth a more relaxed, happy, youthful and pleasing appearance. Results can be seen within 2-5 days afterwards and last for 3-4 months.

2. Alternatively, dermal fillers can be used at the corners of the mouth and/or down the marionette lines to lift the corners of the mouth and restore youthful volume to the area. Results are immediate but will settle fully after 2 weeks. Results can last between 6-12 months.
